John Lewis Christmas Themes

So it is 4.21am on a Thursday morning and I have just bought my first box of Christmas chocolates and I thought I will check out the trends of 2020 at John Lewis! Apart from masks and rainbows I wasn’t sure what might appear!

So this is the list! I had a scroll through The Edit to see the trends!

THE RENAISSANCE

This themes uses references to literature, music and religious imagery in a more contemporary way. The colours used to create this theme are a lovely soft palette of blush pink, mint green and warm neutrals tones. It gives this look a very luxurious feel and a bit of a romantic touch. The gold and copper also adds to the whole look, a very romantic feel!

The decoration that stood out to me is the little golden cherubs, the pink grapes, the little harp, the little Golden Carriage which is £50......(my eyes watered when I saw that) And this unusual pomegranate which is often used at Christmas to decorate food and drink. I was intrigued by the colour of this one! And finally this white peacock!

For me, although it’s a pretty theme and very pleasing to the eye it doesn’t feel as Christmasy as I would want my house to feel! Not for my main tree anyway, it could work for a teenager’s room or maybe an office or I know like YouTuber Louise Pentland this would probably be right up her street! Although I love pink as a colour it doesn’t scream Christmas for me!

POST IMPRESSIONISM

This bold theme is inspired by great artists of the movement like Paul Gauguin, Van Gogh, Henri Rousseau and Paul Cézanne.

This is a bold theme using vibrant colours in an abstract way to create some unusual decorations. Lots of greens, as well as lots of splashes of pinks from tropical birds and flowers, and wild animals with some festive attire and bright insects to create this whole theme. Not everyone’s cup of tea!

Christmas is obviously around the world and although I like my Christmases to be snowy there are lots of countries that have Christmas in the summer or just in tropical climates so I could image this looking quite lovely in the right home! This theme would also be fun for a kid’s bedroom too! Animal themed mini tree might look quite cute! Again not on my main tree though!

POP ART

This theme is inspired by Pop Art with its vibrant, bold and exciting pops of colour. Artists like Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, Jeff Koons, Anish Kapoor, Jackson Pollock and Franz Kline are the inspiration for a lot of this theme. They played with a lot of colour and new techniques which gives you an opportunity to experiment in the same way but on your tree!

I think this is a playful and a bit of tongue in cheek theme, for example the “gold digger” decoration is very tongue in cheek-a bit cheeky but that’s what the Pop Art moment was like, it might end up with you being on Santa’s naughty list! I think the Jeff Koons style decorations are unique and on the right tree in the right setting would like very cool on maybe an art gallery tree or somewhere like that!

IMPRESSIONISM

Impressionism is my favourite art movement. The Impressionists’ most famous artist is Monet and he was very well known for his water lilly painting art. This theme has white water lillies and vintage Santa in his green coat!

I love the the white squirrels, hedgehog and polar bear. I already have similar decorations myself which I’m using for my dining room, white and navy blue! So not in the same way but I really like this theme! I feel you could definitely take elements of this theme.

BLOOMSBURY

Inspired by the Bloomsbury Set, are a group of artists and writers. The style is usually found in interior settings. This theme has a cosy, nostalgic feel, with warm copper tones paired with bold, complimentary colours. I love the cosy feel with the the rich, jewel-like colour palette of purple, red and blue. It’s quite traditionally British which I really like!

I love the old style typewriter, Grammarphone and the grand piano. This is one of my favourite themes, it’s very nostalgic!

ART OF JAPAN

This movement is inspired by the Japonism movement. They have used a mix of traditional western imagery and Japanese imagery and mixed them to create a very cute theme! I wouldn‘t have a tree with this theme, I prefer some of the other themes more but I do like it!

And Lastly

ART NOUVEAU

Art Nouveau period theme is opulence and a sense of glamour. This theme was inspired by artists like Gustav Klimt, Georg Jensen, Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Antoni Gaudí.

I have a shoe like this already which I will use on my navy themes tree and the peacocks on my hall tree which will be turquoise and purple. I love the little ring box too, mine was a deep green! I love this theme. It’s probably my favourite and it’s closest to my Christmas table theme!

So they have some great themes all based on different Art Movements which I love-a great idea. Not as much of a woodland-y theme this year which was a theme I liked that they had done previously !

So that’s it, my thoughts on John Lewis’s New Christmas Collection for 2020!

Merry Christmas Festive Friends XX
